When Wealth Arrives Uninvited: The Unspoken Truth of Turmoil, Stress, Anxiety and Shame Behind Inheriting Money

The Taboo of “Sudden Wealth”

What happens when a big, unexpected lump of money lands in your lap, an inheritance, a divorce settlement, an insurance payout, or some other substantial inflow?

It sounds like THE DREAM, right?

A “hallelujah” moment.

Money YOU didn’t work for.

Money YOU did nothing to create.

The thing that will finally make life easy.

But for many, what follows isn’t freedom.

It’s confusion, guilt, anxiety, shame and a deep “oh hell, what now?”

In this powerful conversation with my Marina Pearson, we dive into the taboo of how tough getting a big financial inflow can be.

Taboo because we’re meant to be grateful.

Taboo because it’s a “rich girl problem… boohoo”

Because this is the realm I love to play in, we dived right into the mucky and mirky truth of the complex and deeply human journey of inheriting wealth.

We discuss how to navigate the unexpected emotions, the overwhelm, the bombardment of unsolicited advice, the identity shifts, and complexity that comes with a sudden change in your net worth.

So that you can emerge as the true custodian of this money, able to honour and direct the vast power within it in a way that represents and expands the greatest version of YOU and ripples out in a way that aligns to your values and how you want to serve in this world.

Watch the full conversation with Marina Pearson on how to reclaim power, peace, and purpose when you receive a substantial inflow of money.

When the Money Arrives

Marina shares how, after her parents passed away, she inherited millions, but no one had ever taught her what to actually do with money -besides spend it!

No training, no guidance, no “driving lessons” for this Ferrari of Finances she’d just been handed.

At first, she thought: Fantastic. Problems solved. I’m set for life.

But soon came the panic.
What if I lose it all?

What if I mess it up?

What if I’m not good enough to handle it?

Then the darker thoughts came

This isn’t even my money?

What if I destroy everything my Dad struggled and suffered for?

How do I know who to trust?

How will others judge me (or want things from me) if they know I have this money?

And this is the reality for so many people who get some form of big money inflow.

Sudden wealth doesn’t erase our fears; it amplifies them.

It shines a giant spotlight on our deepest money stories, our self-worth, and our beliefs about what it means to deserve money.

Many of us grow up believing we "deserve"  - aka our worthiness is dependent on - working hard, suffering, and martyring ourselves.

We only “deserve the rewards” by shedding a LOT of blood, sweat, and tears.

The Hidden Inheritance: Our Money Beliefs

As Marina dived into the reality of her changed situation, she realised she hadn’t just inherited money, she’d inherited her father’s scarcity mindset and her mother’s money guilt.

This happens to all of us.

As the fabulous quote goes…

With kids, more is caught than taught.

And most people infect their kids with a seriously bad case of money dysfunction.

This is why I go on and on about giving your kids money skills, NOT money!

You can do exactly that with the Money Savvy Kids Training.

We all carry intergenerational money patterns, fears, habits, and unconscious beliefs that quietly shape our financial lives.

Marina’s turning point came when she understood that to truly manage her wealth, she needed to transform her relationship with herself first.

Because the truth is:

You can’t create safety through a spreadsheet.

Your safety comes first, from feeling safe in your own hands.

You build your safety through sovereignty, through developing practical money management skills,  by learning how to invest “like a Savvy Investor”

and trusting yourself to lead your wealth, not just hold it or get rid of it as quickly as possible

From Overwhelm to Custodianship

As Marina’s awareness deepened, her identity transformed.

From avoidance to agency.
From panic to power.

She went from “I don’t know what I’m doing” to being able to own the reality that… “I am a wealthy woman.”

No need to justify or apologise.

Just the truth…

“I am a wealthy woman”

She decided to educate herself and joined Savvy Investor to get the skills she had never been taught.

He read The Wealth Chef book and began tracking her money, having monthly money dates, asking better questions, and building a team that respected her voice.

And the deeper she went, the more she discovered that real wealth and freedom are about stewardship.

Being wealthy isn’t about having endless cash to spend.

It’s about directing your money in service of life, love, and values that matter to you.

As Marina said so beautifully:

“I realized I have a fiduciary responsibility to the planet - to put my money into things that create beauty and impact, not destruction.”

Why This Conversation Matters

In the next 20 years, we’re facing one of the largest intergenerational transfers of wealth in history, and most of it is going into women’s hands.

Yet only one in three women feels confident investing.

That means millions of women are about to receive money they’ve never been equipped to manage, and with it, all the emotional complexity that comes along with it.

This is why we must have these conversations.

This is why we must upskill and know how to lead and grow money.

This is why we must help women navigate not just the numbers, but the nervous system of wealth.

To unhook their worthiness from money and how it arrived in their life, and instead claim their sovereignty so they can lead it with clarity, consciousness, and care.

If you are going to be giving anyone money, please ensure you give them the skills - practically and emotionally - to enable that money to expand and serve, instead of shrink and destroy.

Money, at its essence, is neutral.

It’s not good or bad.
It’s like tofu. Inherently tasteless 😂

It takes on the flavour we give it.

And when we give it direction, aligned with our values, our purpose, and our sovereignty, it becomes one of the greatest forces for good on this planet.

If You’ve Ever Received (or Will Receive) a Lump of Money...

Take a breath.
Don’t rush.
Let it settle.

Separate who you are from what’s landed in your life.

Money is not a test of worthiness.

It’s an invitation to leadership.

Step into stewardship.

Skill yourself up.

Surround yourself with others who are choosing to lead their money with grace and fun. A great place to find this fabulous tribe is in The Wealth Builder Club
