Why Trying To Find And Follow Your Passion Is A Bad Idea

Here is some advice that could save you a tonne of heartache.

✋ Stop trying to find your purpose.

✋ Stop trying to follow your bliss.

✋ Stop trying to create a business around something you're passionate about.

✋ Stop trying to find your work / life balance

In the personal development world there's a lot of…

“Go after your passion”

... “Follow your bliss”

… “Do what you love”

...and the money will flow!

Whilst the concept sounds all warm and fuzzy and fabulous, in reality it’s a fantastic strategy to do and achieve nothing.

Trying to find and following your passion

is an amazing strategy to hide and stay stuck.

Here’s why.

Most people approach passion something like this.

“When I know what I am here for, when I’ve found my passion and purpose… I’ll show up, give my all, put loads of energy and effort into it.”

The problem is…

“You can’t be passionate about something

you haven’t shown up for yet.”

Over and over people tell me…

“Ann, I don’t know what my purpose is, I don’t know what I’m passionate about”.

Behind that statement is a darker truth, the person is saying…

“I’m going to sit here on the fence of non-commitment and wait for my purpose and my passion to find me”

That is a brilliant way to stay “safe”.

The truth is that anything worthwhile in life has obstacles, pitfalls and complexities.

When you sit on the fence, examining each thing that comes past against an arbitrary” passion and purpose” test, it’s super easy to see the challenges and work involved and go…

“Oh, I’m not sure that’s my passion, I’ll just sit here a bit longer and wait for something better to come along.”

This video is all about how to avoid this dangerous waiting place.

Through all my years of progress, success, work, businesses, financial expansion and creation, finding incredible love and working with thousands of people to help them live their juiciest, most abundant life - this I know for sure.

It’s the other way around.

Commit, do the work and passion will follow.

When you approach life from the perspective of…

... “How can I bring my passion to whatever I do?”

…magical things happen.

Work before passion is way more generative, life expanding and sustainable than hanging around waiting for passion to strike.

I'm not saying you have to go and do something that you hate.

I’m not saying you stay in a relationship that is not generative.

I’m not saying you settle and accept your lot.

What I suggest is that you dig deep and get creative about how you can bring…

💖 your joy,

💖 your passion,

💖 your authenticity,

💖 your creativity,

💖 your love,

💖 your very lifeforce…

… to whatever it is you need to do to create and live the life you want.

The reality is, there are some things in life that are not going to be your passion, but you're going to need to do them to have success.

Maybe you don't particularly like downloading the transactions on your bank statement to create your income statement and track where your money's going.

So how can you make it fun?

Maybe tracking the effectiveness of a promotion or following up on leads feels worse than rubbing sandpaper over your eyeballs, but if that’s what you need to do to increase your sales and improve your profit margins - dig deep and make it fun.

When you choose to bring joy and passion to every aspect of your life because you understand that the action you are doing is firstly a choice (yep nobody has a gun to your head telling you to create your dream life), and secondly is going to contribute to what you want… that's when you really live and create an expansive, joyful life.

Stop for a moment and think about these two questions…

  • Where in your life do you need to show up with more passion than waiting for the passion to show up for you?
  • Where in your life has your passion grown because you chose to show up and do the work first?

This concept also talks to many creatives who can get really caught into the equally insidious belief...

“If I’m committed to my art, I have to live off my passion

and my creative work has to pay for my lifestyle”.

Noooooooooo…..

This terrible burden keeps so many amazing creatives from living their passion because their passion may not be able to pay the bills.

This belief will prevent them from doing the financial wellbeing work like:

Hence it will keep them trapped forever.

We do our wealthy life actions, not because we're passionate about them, but because they enable us to live the life we want.

Doing the wealth work frees us up to do all the things we are passionate about.

So let this be your mantra..

Work Before Passion.

Get stuck in, do the work, focus and grow and once you start making progress, notice how you’ll become passionate about it.

Bring your passion to the work you do and you will live the most expensive and juicy life.

With huge love,

Ann
