You Can Love What You Do and Make Money

You started your business because you love what you do.
You wanted purpose.
You wanted freedom.
You wanted to make a difference.

But somewhere between the long hours, the bills, and dodging your tax consultant’s emails… you might have found yourself wondering:

Is this actually working?
Or am I just self-employed, overwhelmed, and stuck with a lunatic boss (me)?

You're not alone.

In a recent conversation on the Veterinary Rehabilitation Podcast, I dove deep into the money truths most business owners never get taught, and how to reclaim your financial power, whether you’re just starting out or years into the game.

This is your moment to pause, reflect, and get real about what your business is truly for.

Your Business Needs a Purpose And a Price Tag

A business isn’t just a place to do things.
It’s a vehicle.
A tool.
A container for cash flow, creative expression, and - if you choose it, wealth.

Here’s the first mindset shift:

Your business should be in service of you,

not the other way around.

So start here:

How much money do you need your business to generate monthly to fund your version of a wealthy life?

Not “someday.”
Not “once it scales.”
Now.

Until you define what “enough” looks like for you, your business will likely gobble up everything, your time, your energy, your money, and leave you wondering why you feel so drained.

Asset or Cash Flow Machine? (Know the Difference)

Here’s a trap I see so many business owners fall into:

They assume they’re building an asset, something they’ll one day sell.
But most small businesses aren't structured that way.

They’re tied to you, your name, your energy, your expertise.

That’s not a bad thing.
It’s only a problem if what you have isn’t what you think you have.

Most businesses are cash flow machines, not sellable assets.

Which means your focus needs to shift:

👉 From: “I’m reinvesting everything into building my business.”
👉 To: “How do I ensure this business pays me consistently and sustainably, money I then convert into real assets that will serve me for life?”

You First: Profit Isn’t Greedy. It’s Smart.

Repeat after me:

You come first.

Not your suppliers.
Not your software subscriptions.
Not your team.
Not even the taxman (though we’ll get to him too).

One of the most powerful shifts you can make as a business owner is to allocate your profit margin up front.

That’s the amount your business keeps after all expenses are paid, and it’s from this that you get paid.

💡 Put it in a separate account. Don’t touch it. That’s your wealth-building money.

Because when you pay yourself last, there’s never anything left.

This is one of the core principles inside The Wealth Builder Club, where we show you how to structure your business finances in a way that supports you, not just the business.

Know Your Numbers (Without Hating It)

Look, I get it. Most of us didn’t start a business to become accountants.

But ignoring your numbers doesn’t make them go away.
It just makes you more anxious and vulnerable.

Here are the bare minimum metrics to know:

  • Monthly Revenue Sources – Where’s the money coming from? Which offers or services are actually profitable?
  • Fixed Expenses – Rent, salaries, subscriptions. What’s your base cost just to stay open?
  • Variable Expenses – Equipment, supplies, marketing. Are these giving you a return?
  • Emergency & Buffer Funds – You need at least 3 months of base expenses in an operational buffer account. (Yes, really.)
  • Tax Allocation – Set aside your average tax % each month. No more panic when the bill lands.

And if this sounds like a lot? Don’t worry.

No.

You’re here to serve, and to be financially nourished in return.

That’s not selfish.
That’s sustainable.

So if you’ve been:

  • Avoiding money conversations
