The 5 Wealth Killers (and How to Slay the Them)

This is the first of five wealth killers that quietly sabotage your freedom. And it starts with the one most people mistake for strength.

When it comes to building wealth, most people think the key lies in the tactics - the what to do. What account to open, what fund to invest in, and what side hustle to start.

But the real roadblocks aren’t found in bank statements or investment platforms.

They live in us.

They lurk in our beliefs, our behaviours, and the hidden scripts we’ve absorbed over a lifetime, often without even knowing it.

After nearly two decades helping thousands of people create financial freedom and live truly wealthy lives, I’ve identified five core wealth blocks that keep people stuck, even when they want to do the right things with their money.

These are the 5 Wealth Killers.

And the first killer is a sneaky beast...

Wealth Killer #1: The Lone Ranger

Sadly, many of us develop the lone ranger affliction, with a weird set of beliefs creeping in that:

  • Asking for help is weak. Or worse - cheating;
  • Having help means it doesn’t really count, and
  • We are meant to know all this stuff already and be good at it from the get go.

We’ve taken on board the BS belief that:

“You’ve got to figure it out on your own.”

So we try.

We struggle.

We discover we don’t know what to do or how to do it.

We hide.
We judge our own incompetence harshly and make ourselves feel even more useless.

When we start something new and our incompetence is right in front of us, we believe this somehow makes us a lesser person.

Our Not Enough Monster gets to come out big time.

We’re not good enough.

I have been afflicted by this particular wealth killer over and over.

The fear of not being “good enough” can be crippling.

If I don’t consciously deal with it ahead of time and set myself up to move through the discomfort, I know it will likely conquer me

Not Good Enough is the Fuel of The Lone Ranger

It is driven by our fear of not being good enough, and the result of being a lone ranger is that we get to prove we are not good enough!

Which is why it is one of the most dangerous wealth killers.

The Paradox

The paradox we need to dance within is that…

This journey belongs to no one but you

AND

No one successfully does it alone.

All of us must make our own way and let go of the illusion that someone is coming to rescue us…

Nobody is coming!

Because that someone is already here.

That someone is YOU.

AND…

For those of us who feel super vulnerable revealing that we don’t know how to do something, and like to pretend we’ve got ALL our sh*t together (even when that is completely unrealistic) and only show ourselves when we can get a gold star..

…We must learn to ask for and receive help - that gets us there faster.

😳 What Stops Us From Asking For Help?

If you’ve ever felt too embarrassed to ask a question, too scared to raise your hand, or too anxious to admit you don’t know where to start, or what to do next, you’re not alone.

This isn’t a logic problem.

It’s a wound.

A deep fear that if we reveal our messiness, our incompetence, or our confusion, we’ll be judged and found unworthy.

We all want to be seen as “sorted.”

But pretending keeps us stuck.

When we try to go it alone, we isolate ourselves from the very things we need most: knowledge, skills, a skilled teacher, support, community, and accountability.

We need to re-remember how great it is to be incompetent.

To recall how good it is to learn and grow.

This isn't a weakness.

This is our superpower

When you become OK with being incompetent at something, you free yourself up to discover and learn and grow and get what you actually want.

You separate your skills from your innate worthiness.

You stop hiding, and you start learning.

And you remember…

Learning isn’t a reflection of your worth.

It’s a sign of your courage.

✨ My Story (and Why I Get It)

Years ago, when I decided to create The Wealth Chef, I knew I needed help. I had zero idea how to build an online business.

So I joined a mastermind that cost me $35,000 a year. A number that made me want to vomit it felt so huge.

I walked into a room full of digital marketing experts and felt like the dumbest person in the room.

That discomfort?
That vulnerability?
That incompetence I felt?

It was exactly the thing that revealed to me that I was in a place where I could grow and expand, and achieve my dreams.

But my Not Good Enough Monster took over the driving seat, and I stayed quiet. I didn’t ask questions for fear of these people finding out how clueless I was (and therefore how badly I didn’t belong).

For the whole of the first three-day mastermind I attended, I was there physically - but the real me was stuck out on the plains of my Not Enoughness riding my Lone Ranger horse.

When I went home, I was gutted. I knew I had wasted not only money but a massive opportunity.

When the next three-day mastermind came around, I put on my big girl panties, I felt the terrible not-enough fear, and pre-decided to ask endless questions, to be deeply curious, and to show my messy, messy work!

It felt really hard… and it transformed my world.

This is how we get off our Lone Ranger horse and get the support we need.

This is the paradox and what it actually means that…

…WE ALONE MUST WALK OUR PATH.

We face our demons and we do it anyway.
